Ladies and Gentleman – I can safely say, that this phrase has created a Pavlov’s response for me to stand up and seek out new fashionable wears that I will probably never get to experience BUT will be happy to show you.
I should probably note here, that International Fashion Week Dubai is a part of a conglomerate of the events. There are five of them, spread all around the world. You can go to a fashion week in Dubai, Paris, Milan, New York and London. So, the stakes were high. What did we get in the end?
From haute couture, through ethnic wears and Farys Design Jewelry – everything was a flamboyant chaotic mess and I loved every minute of it. Safe to say – I had to acknowledge my disability in that department, which is that I could never really treat it seriously, as I probably should have. The reason why is that I have never expected that I would ever see one of those dresses in real life. It was a bitmap for me, drawn by some computer designer-ex-machina who never really intended for me, a boy from a small village in Poland where old people live, to see, with his very own eyes, a sparkling world of rich people in their playground. The amount of money around the stage was overpowering. Even small children had rubies and sapphires round their belts and someone like me, a journalist perhaps, a writer from Poland couldn’t be more out of place comparing myself even to a cameraman who couldn’t help but had to buy Gucci sneakers. They were on sale, for someone’s sake!
On to the show – I say to myself, so I wouldn’t drift away too much. The second day was packed. Everything went smoother this time as well. It’s a good prognostic for the last show and feta that will inevitably occur at the end of it.
During the second day, there were few motifs I noticed. First one was definitely a callback to the old days. Life, as it seems, circled back a few ages for some of the designers, from Romania and Poland, who thought that European folklore must have been something what everyone missed and it needs a comeback. You probably know them – flowery patterns, weird hats and long dresses that women in feudal Europe wear to live, work and die in. Personally, I don’t really fancy these stylistic choices. Mostly because it connects with my memories from school, when during every ceremony we had to watch these polish folk dances that were extremely cringy for my young mind. That’s why I probably bounced off of that. If it was uncool for my younger self, then my older self can’t appreciate it in a way it should probably be appreciated.
In case of one designer though, it went in a totally different direction. She must have stumbled one day upon a thought – well, what if we would make clothes based on military apparel from 19th century? So yeah, that’s another thing I guess. But, as I said before, can’t hate the brave idea, so I guess there is something in those military jackets for special occasions that I just didn’t see before. It’s for you to decide if that’s something you’d like. Personally, I would definitely rock one of those with some Farys Design Jewelry on some punk concert where I do something to the system, that it really doesn’t want. And that’s why we have laws.
The other face of the show was very glamorous and grandiose haute couture and expensive materials fiesta. Can’t really say if it moved me, but judging by the faces made by many in the audience, it definitely made an impact. And I guess that’s that.
